Abstract
Karaulov's book Активная грамматика и ассоциативно- вербальная сеть, is the most recent work in a series of articles and books inspired by his Русский ассоциативный словарь ( Russian Associative Dictionary, further in this review RAD. See my review of this dictionary in RLJ, No. 171-173, pages 420-424). The previous books drawing on material from the dictionary are (Караулов, Ю H., Ассоциативная грамматика русского языка. Москва: Русский язык, 1993). and (Добровольский, Д. О., Ю. Н. Караулов. Ассоциативный фразеологический словарь русского языка.. Москва: Помовский и парт- неры, 1994). The first work is devoted primarily to showing ho the grammatical system of Russian is contained in the mind of native speaker in the form of a verbal associative network. second is a listing of phraseological units (proverbs, saying cliches, and literary allusions) that are reflected in the RAD. Th current work places the concept of an associative grammar in t context of other possible grammars (generative, functional, com municative), surveys the form in which an associative gram exists, notes some general grammatical tendencies evident in th verbal associative network, shows, with numerous examples, large amount of lexical, semantic, cognitive and pragmatic info mation that is represented in RAD and gives some traits of Russian "language personality".
