Translated Title: The development of cross-cultural communication skills through a virtual study program: Challenges and lessons

Abstract: This article describes the experience of designing and implementing a Russian as a foreign language distance learning program for American students within the Critical Language Scholarship program of American Councils at Lobachevsky University (Nizhnii Novgorod, Russia). The relevance of the work is due to the rapid transition from traditional forms of education to distance learning. The authors outline the main components and tools for creating a communicative environment for maximum possible immersion in an intercultural communication environment in the context of studying Russian language and culture online. The role of language environment when studying foreign languages can hardly be overestimated. This article describes ways for creating a virtual communicative environment by teaching the Russian language entirely in Russian, creating communication between students and teachers only in Russian, offering obligatory regular practice of speaking with a language partner, and hosting a virtual cultural program in Russian. The article deals with the modeling of the virtual language environment. The authors describe the use of interactive online resources for organizing students’ extra-curricular communication activity as a necessary factor in the development of conversational skills.
