Abstract
The Common Black Hawk (Buteogallus anthracinus) is widely distributed from the southwestern United States to northern South America and shows a marked preference for water-associated habitats. Here, we report 3 sightings and 1 nesting record of the species in the northeastern part of the state of Jalisco, in the southern portion of the Central Plateau of Mexico, documented in 2024 and 2025. Nesting was confirmed by the presence of a nest and the observation of a juvenile flying alongside an adult in June 2025. This observation is the first formal confirmation of successful nesting for the southern portion of the Central Plateau of Mexico and suggests that the species might nest regularly at scattered locations throughout this area. Our observations suggest that in this semiarid and heavily anthropized region of Mexico, xeroriparian systems with tall, mature trees are critical breeding habitat for Common Black Hawks, as they are in other inland locations throughout the species’ range.
