Western North American Naturalist
Grant Supporting Publication Costs for Monographic Works in Natural History

The Monographs of the Western North American Naturalist publishes original peer-reviewed research pertaining to the biological natural history of western North America. Typically monographic works are of a scope and length that exceed the specifications of the associated quarterly journal, Western North American Naturalist.

We are pleased to announce 2 grants of up to $2500 each to fund the publication of a natural history monograph submitted to and reviewed by the Western North American Naturalist. Our intent is to assist authors who have extensive unpublished research in covering publication page charges, especially when the cost would otherwise be prohibitive. The amount will be awarded as a waiver on the final invoice at publication rather than as a financial distribution prior to publication. All manuscripts will be peer-reviewed, and acceptance for publication is not guaranteed.

To apply, please submit a 1-page proposal, including the following elements:

  1. A provisional title
  2. An outline of the monograph with any necessary background information
  3. A target date for submission

Expectations of award recipients:

  1. Submit your natural history monograph to Monographs of the Western North American Naturalist by 31 December 2025.
  2. Agree to be at least a one-time reviewer for the Western North American Naturalist. Peer-review is an essential function of the journal, but peer-reviewers are increasingly difficult to find. As a reviewer and a potential author, you will support WNAN by not only offering a manuscript of your research to be published but also by improving other manuscripts submitted for publication.

Send your proposal to Mark C. Belk, editor-in-chief, at wnan@byu.edu with "WNAN Monograph Proposal" in the subject line by March 17, 2023. Applicants will receive notification by March 31, 2023.
