Abstract
In this study, the first report of populations of Conasellus intermedius is made in the state of Utah (formerly in the genus Caecidotea, this species was assigned to Conasellus by Lewis et al. 2023). This also marks the first record of C. intermedius significantly outside of the range as presented by Williams (1970). Breeding populations were found in the Jordan, Provo, Sevier, Weber, and Western Colorado River watersheds. Interestingly, depigmented individuals were found at some survey locations. Specimens from all populations were confirmed to be C. intermedius by examination of the morphology of the genital pleopods, and mitochondrial DNA 16S gene sequencing was conducted on 1 population.
En este estudio reportamos por primera vez la presencia de poblaciones de la cochinilla de agua dulce Conasellus intermedius en el estado de Utah (anteriormente ubicada en el género Caecidotea, esta especie fue asignada a Conasellus por Lewis et al. 2023). Este hallazgo también representa el primer registro de C. intermedius significativamente fuera de la distribución presentada por Williams (1970). Se encontraron poblaciones reproductivas en las cuencas de los ríos Jordan, Provo, Sevier, Weber y del oeste de Colorado. Curiosamente, se observaron individuos sin pigmentación en algunos sitios de muestreo. Se confirmo que los ejemplares de todas las poblaciones correspondían a C. intermedius mediante un examen morfológico de los pleópodos genitales, además, se realizó la secuenciación del gen mitocondrial 16S en una de las poblaciones.
