The sentence starters I worked so hard to spiral into the year’s curriculum became more than a scaffold– they were a permanent fixture. It was March, and my struggling writers were asking, “What sentence starter comes next?” without understanding why the transition worked. Their writing was organized, but lacked voice and intentionality. Students should know they control and choose their writing, so I decided to give students a new way to see their work and adapt the sentence starters they already knew. To do this, I looked for an allegory that students could connect to while planning their writing.
