The voice of the child becoming a woman played through my head as I read Iveliz Explains It All, Andrea Beatriz Arango’s debut novel. The poetry flows from page to page explaining the world of Iveliz, filled with second chances, 7th grade, a journal, Spanish, sightings of her dead dad, Mami (her mother), and Mimi (her grandmother, who has Alzheimer’s). Iveliz is faced with an In School Behavior Intervention (ISBI) because she messed up her second chance. In ISBI, she has time to write her Seventh-Grade Goals: An Official List, which modulates and changes throughout the book.
