"How do I draw a picture of democracy?" a seventh grader asked. "I know it's a noun."
"That's a good question," I said, stalling for time. It was my first year teaching at a school in the intermountain west, where seventh graders had grammar instruction every Tuesday.
"Why don't you try drawing a symbol of democracy?" I asked. "Like the American flag or Lady Liberty."
"That works," the student said.
