Description
This tiny sprout of life is emerging from the confines of a shot glass found on the west shore of Utah Lake. I took this photograph while volunteering on a Saturday morning service project. The project was led by a partnership between the Utah Lake Authority and Vineyard City. I personally filled an entire trash bag with popcorn bags, aluminum cans, styrofoam, plywood, and plenty of other trash and garbage items. Seeing the juxtaposition of natural and synthetic materials on the shore really struck me and stuck with me. This photo captures that juxtaposition for me: life, trying to emerge and thrive from a hostile and unnatural environment. For me, environmental sustainability in action means volunteering, cleaning up, picking up trash and litter, and doing our daily and weekly part to care for the earth. It can happen in a formal service project, or just when you see a wrapper on the street. Cleaning up after ourselves is part of being an everyday steward.
