Abstract

A real-time forecast system for atmospheric pollutants is presented. The airquality forecast system is based on the EURAD Model (European Air Pollution DispersionModel). The daily updated forecast of atmospheric constituents is operational sinceNovember 2001. The chemistry transport model EURAD calculates the transport, transformation and deposition of atmospheric constituents for a period of 72 hours on adaily basis. Major products of the AQ forecast system are the atmospheric pollutants O3,NO2, SO2, CO, PM10 and benzene. An intensive effort is done to carry out a verificationprocedure of the model forecast using observational data from the German EnvironmentalAgency (UBA) monitoring network. Examples of major air pollution events and parts of theverification procedure are shown in section 4. The results of the forecasts on the differentregions are published and are updated every day on the EURAD homepage www.eurad.unikoeln.
