Abstract

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormonism or the LDS Church) was organized in upstate New York in 1830. Since 1847, the church’s headquarters have been located in Salt Lake City, Utah. Because of these origins, it has commonly been viewed as a U.S.-based religion. However, as of the end of 2004, more than half of the religion’s 12.3 million members resided outside the United States, with more than 3.9 million of those members living in South America and Mexico (compiled from a variety of Web sites atwww.lds.org). In the United States, Mormons are the fourth largest religious denomination behind Catholics, Southern Baptists, and United Methodists(Lindner, 2005). These statistics signify that for organizations around the world, and particularly for those in the Western Hemisphere, it is increasingly likely that Mormons will comprise at least a noticeable portion of the work-force. More significantly, key principles of Mormonism profoundly shape how Mormons view adult learning and work itself.
