Materializing Strategy and Strategizing Material: Why Matter Matters

Abstract
We see and recommend a shift in research on strategic management, toward a better understanding of the role played by materiality in strategy work. We claim that this shift accompanies the need to better connect the micro to the macro within the strategy field, in line with the strategy-as-practice agenda (Whittington, 1996). In so doing, we invoke the notion of affordances (Gibson, 1977), i.e. that ‘the materiality of an object favors, shapes or invites, and at the same time constrains, a set of specific uses (Zammuto et al., 2007, p. 752).
