Abstract
The theme of trees and Peace Parks was common to this second global conference on Building a Sustainable World Through Tourism held in Montreal, Canada, in September 1994. The opening ceremony included a tree planting ceremony on top of Montreal's Mont Royal.
The objectives of the conference were to seek participation from over 80 countries; present 200 international success stories related to how tourism contributed to sustainable development; share ideas leading to a specific proposal for action, especially in regards to a millennium project; form International Institute for Peace Through Tourism (IIPT) as a membership organization; and reunite and celebrate accomplishments and supportive networks that began in Vancouver, where the first global conference took place in 1988. Featured speakers included Queen Noor of Jordan, who called attention to tourism's ability to reunite families and cultures as part of the conference's "One World, One Family" theme, Robert Burns of the World Travel and Tourism Council, 14-year-old Severn Cullis-Suzuki of the Environmental Children's Organization, and keynote speaker Noel J. Brown of the United Nations Environment Program. Noel Brown gave the tourism industry specific action-oriented challenges to improve itself as a medium for peace and sustainability. Presentations by an American astronaut and a former Soviet cosmonaut portrayed the earth as a beautiful island in the immensity of space - a powerful viewpoint and argument for environmental care.
