Super Software: What Are the Top Software Tools for Internal Auditors?

Abstract
A survey was conducted to investigate software usage among internal auditors around the world. Results showed that the categories of software they most used were, in order of ranking, word processing, spreadsheet, data analysis and extraction, presentation graphics, and database. The software categories the respondents felt were most crucial to their mission were word processing, spreadsheet, data analysis and extraction, database and utility. The most preferred brands were Excel, 1-2-3, Word, PowerPoint, WordPerfect and Access. The participants expressed their belief that computer technology has greatly changed internal auditing practice during the 1990s and will have a greater role in the internal audit department until the year 2000.
