Abstract

This article employs an intentionally strengths-focused approach by conducting in-depth qualitative interviews with 46 exemplary Black, married couples (N = 92 individuals; 46 wives, 46 husbands) to explore keys to their successful marriage relationships and family lives. This study focuses on two core themes: Growth Mindset – “We’re still learning. … It’s a lifelong process.” and Elevated Perspectives – “It made me realize what is important.” Given the range and depth of 283 coded references to the second theme, it is described by four sub-themes: (a) Humility, (b) Internal Locus of Control – “Command your day”; (c) Recognition of Divine Intervention – “The Lord provided for us”; and (d) Hope and Trust in God – “We have to wait on God.” Around 40 verbatim participant responses are offered to illustrate the themes and sub-themes. Implications for practice and further research are offered.
