Abstract
Human trafficking is a worldwide problem that places those trafficked at very high risk for multiple adverse outcomes, including mental illness. Although research on human trafficking has become abundant in other academic disciplines (e.g., sociology, public health, criminology, social work), psychology research specific to the mental health treatment of survivors remains limited. Objective: The purpose of this study was to gather recommendations from mental health professionals for the mental health treatment of trafficking survivors. Method: This paper reviewed extant literature regarding human trafficking and current mental health treatment provided to survivors. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 21 mental health professionals who directly work with trafficking survivors. Data were analyzed using qualitative content analysis methodology. Results: The overarching themes derived from the data included a need for mental health professionals to implement trafficking survivor-informed care and comprehensive care. Trafficking survivor-informed care requires using a survivor-centered approach to treatment that specifically addresses multilayered trauma and considers survivor multicultural factors. Comprehensive care can be achieved through trafficking specific interdisciplinary collaboration and services, case management, frequent interdisciplinary training for mental health professionals, and outreach efforts. Conclusion: Recommendations for the mental health treatment of trafficking survivors involves trafficking survivor-specific care that is personalized to survivors and comprehensive in nature to meet survivors’ multiple complex needs.
