Description
In the spring of 1876 three columns of the US army converged on the Sioux and Cheyenne Indians in what has been called the Great Sioux War of 1876. George R. Crook led the column advancing from the south. The Sioux and Cheyenne Indians met the army at the Rosebud in Montana on June 17, 1876 in one of the largest Indian battles in the American West. The fight was contested for hours before the Indians withdrew. Even though Crook claimed a victory, he retreated from the area, meaning that he actually thought he had been beaten. This left the Indians with a free hand to concentrate their forces on the Seventh Cavalry a week later at the Battle of the Little Bighorn and to defeat George Armstrong Custer’s command.
