Abstract

Scrupulosity, also known as religious OCD, is often misunderstood and under-recognized by those who have experienced it. This research adopts an interdisciplinary approach, integrating experience design theories and frameworks with research on scrupulosity, to develop an event that aims to increase awareness and empathy among attendees for individuals who experience scrupulosity. The experience design frameworks applied include the design thinking process, the self-determination theory, and the experience-type framework. Current research suggests that there is a need for further research on the case studies and qualitative phenotypes of individuals who have experienced scrupulosity, which this study aims to address.

As part of the design thinking process, an observation, nine qualitative interviews, and a focus group were conducted. Common themes among those who experience scrupulosity include the cycle of obsession-compulsion, the emotional burden, and the daily frequency. The event took place on Monday, May 5th, 2025. It included an art gallery, a keynote, a panel, and a newspaper handout inviting people to write down their takeaways. The event received a 57.1 NPS score from 23 survey respondents, which is considered excellent. The retrospective post-then-pre questionnaire resulted in a statistically significant difference in empathy and an approaching statistically significant difference in awareness before versus after the event. One area for further research is conducting a qualitative study on individuals without scrupulosity to gain a deeper understanding of their current perspective on mental health, as well as identifying those with scrupulosity versus those without in the retrospective post-then-pre questionnaire.
