Biography
Dorothea Christiane Leporin Erxleben was the first female medical doctor in Germany. She was born in Quedlinburg, Prussia on November 13, 1715 and was instructed in medicine by her father. The idea of a woman studying medicine was shocking at the time, but she proved herself by passing medical examinations. She Erxleben was awarded her degree on June 12, 1754.
Erxleben challenged theological and philosophical groundwork of why women were subordinate to men and addressed her remarks to readers of both sexes. She died on June 13, 1762.
