Biography
Helene Böhlau was born in Weimar to Hermann and Therese Böhlau, who ran a bookstore. She had an excellent education, and took many trips abroad. On one such trip, she met her future husband, Friedrich Arndt, an architect. Just before they married, he converted to Islam (from Judaism), and went by the name Omar al Raschid Bey. For a year after they married, they lived in Constantinople, and then they moved to Munich, where they spent the rest of their time together.
