Primary focuses: identify molecular accelerators and brakes of beta cell replication; understand how these factors regulate functional beta cell mass; develop small molecule activators of beta cell proliferation pathways; apply findings to two-state models of beta cell function (obese vs. lean, young vs. aged, male vs. female); and, discover unique regulators of integrative metabolism.
