Abstract
This work provides an autobiographical sketch of Welsh’s early years (college and time in the military), and then a detailed account of the botany collecting trips on the Great Plains. The first was in 1958 and focused on the Legume tribe Galegeae. The second covered northwestern Iowa, eastern South Dakota, North Dakota, and Nebraska. Welsh’s early trips here were training grounds for his adventures and publications later on. Appendix II (page 78) outlines work conducted in Tahiti and the Society Islands. Color pictures are included.
