Abstract
Having just heard Richard Tucker in the prime of his career, I think you’ll find it surprising to hear what he sounded like when he was 24 years old and had just learned his first opera aria. Let me describe how he learned that aria by re-telling the story as it was told to me by the pianist Alex Alexay, who was an accompanist for Eleanor Steber and Jan Peerce, among other singers:
