Abstract
A May night in Stockholm can be wintry. The moon turns pale and glacial. Daybreak arrives with an icy thrust of wind. Those who sit in Gustav Adolf Square feel how a shiver arises from the water and flows into the city, chilling the nearby streets. Only the prospect of something warming and beautiful could induce one to pace those streets. Jussi Bjorling's guest performances in the 1940s and '50s were shining events in the Stockholm tundra.
