Abstract
This study explores self-assessment accuracy among Japanese second language (L2) learners compared to learners of Romance languages. This research aims to investigate the extent of accuracy in self-assessment among Japanese learners and compare it with their counterparts studying Romance languages. Additionally, the study explores the variables influencing the accuracy of self-assessment in this context. The participants in this study comprised 144 undergraduate students enrolled in Japanese, French, Spanish, or Portuguese courses at Brigham Young University. Most participants possessed practical experience using their L2 in the target cultural context, complementing their academic coursework. The Language Ability Self-Evaluation Resource (LASER) was utilized for participants to self-assess their oral proficiency, while the Oral Proficiency Interview by Computer (OPIc) provided their actual proficiency levels. The discrepancy between LASER and OPIc scores yielded a calibration score, facilitating an understanding of participants' accuracy in self-assessment. Although the statistical significance of findings was minimal, a discernible pattern emerged wherein learners with actual higher proficiency tended to assess themselves as less proficient, while those with lower proficiency levels tend to over-assess their abilities. While an ANOVA did not detect significant differences in mean calibration scores between Romance language learners and Japanese learners, Romance language learners exhibited slightly higher levels of accuracy in self-assessment. Notably, all language groups displayed negative mean calibration scores, indicating a tendency to under-assess. However, the difference in calibration scores between Intermediate High and Advanced High proficiency levels was statistically significant (p = .027). No variables were found to significantly predict the calibration.
