James Copestake teaches development economics at the University of Bath, UK . He has researched and written about microfinance, development strategy, and poverty in South Asia, Africa, and Latin America for twenty years. He has researched and supervised doctoral students in the fields of agrarian change, microfinance, poverty, social protection, and aid management. A more detailed version of this paper is published in the October edition of the World Development journal.
