Description
In 1865, a fierce war broke out on the territory of what is now the US state of Utah between the Ute Indians and the white settlers, an unequal struggle that still stands today in the shadow of the great clashes on the Plains. This conflict is one of the most notable chapters of the Indian wars. For three years, a handful of warriors under the chief Black Hawk resisted the crushing superiority of the Utah militia. The Indians at times gained the surrender of over 30 white settlers. The present volume documents the desperate struggle of the Ute Indians for their hunting grounds. It takes into detailed account their ethno-cultural characteristics and their leadership structure.
