Description
On November 25, 1876, the US cavalry, under Colonel Mackenzie, attacked a large village of the Northern Cheyenne along with Indian allies (mainly Pawnee and Shoshone). These attacks often led to the indiscriminate slaughter of Indians, but this struggle developed differently because the Cheyenne were firmly opposed. It was one of the biggest battles of 1876, with the defeat of the 7th Cavalry at the Little Big Horn, the US Army had plunged into a deep crisis. The campaigns against the Indians in the autumn of 1876 are often overlooked. The battle of the Red Fork and the destruction of the Northern Cheyenne village of Dull Knife were perhaps the most significant of these clashes.
