Abstract

Here we present, through field collections conducted via monitoring with Sherman traps and phylogenetic analyses of the mitochondrial cytochrome b gene obtained through Sanger sequencing, records worth recognizing of rodent species from Las Joyas Scientific Station (LJSS) within the Sierra de Manantlán Biosphere Reserve. We report for the first time the presence of Nyctomys sumichrasti colimensis in this locality. Additionally, we present new records of Reithrodontomys wagneri and specimens belonging to Reithrodontomys sumichrasti clade IV, a clade recognized as an undescribed species within the R. sumichrasti species complex; the latter expands the geographic distribution of this new species. Finally, we include records of Microtus specimens forming a sister clade with M. mexicanus/M. mogollonensis, albeit with genetic distance values exceeding 9%. Our findings underscore the evolutionary significance of the apparent isolation of Sierra de Manantlán, Jalisco, particularly in influencing the speciation process of various rodent species. These findings underscore the importance of continuing biological inventories in less explored areas of Mexico.


Aquí presentamos, a través de colectas de campo mediante trampas tipo Sherman y de análisis filogenéticos del gen mitocondrial del citocromo b obtenido mediante secuenciación Sanger, registros relevantes de especies de roedores de la Estación Científica Las Joyas (LJSS) dentro de la Reserva de la Biosfera Sierra de Manantlán. Reportamos por primera vez la presencia de Nyctomys sumichrasti colimensis en esta localidad. Además, presentamos nuevos registros de Reithrodontomys wagneri y especímenes pertenecientes al clado IV de Reithrodontomys sumichrasti, clado reconocido como especie no descrita dentro del complejo de especies de R. sumichrasti; este último amplía la distribución geográfica de esta nueva especie. Finalmente, incluimos registros de especímenes de Microtus formando un clado hermano con M. mexicanus/M. mogollonensis, aunque con valores de distancia genética superiores al 9%. Nuestros hallazgos subrayan la importancia evolutiva del aparente aislamiento de la Sierra de Manantlán, Jalisco, particularmente al influir en el proceso de especiación de varias especies de roedores. Estos hallazgos subrayan la importancia de continuar con los inventarios biológicos en áreas poco exploradas de México.
