Biography
Katharina Elisabeth Goethe was born in Frankfurt am Main on February 19, 1731. She married Johann Kaspar Goethe on August 20, 1748 and had four children, one of whom was Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, a German writer and statesman. Katharina was known to have “exceptional intellect, marked individuality, and a joyous cast of mind”, which is apparent in her letters. She died in Frankfurt am Main on September 13, 1808. Her letters of correspondence were published after her death in 1885 and 1889.
