Abstract
T he German Postal system honored the 100th anniversary of Golo Mann's birth in 2009 with a new stamp, which displayed his face with the caption Literarischer Historiker, meaning literary historian. This apt description captures much about the essence of his thinking and work as a historian, as he was a uniquely gifted writer and thus bridged the gap between scholarly historical research and thoughtfully composed literature. In addition to Germany, Switzerland also lays claim to Golo Mann , as he had lived there for many years after returning from American :xile, when Nazi Germany was finally defeated by the Allies.
