Abstract
The man elected as president of the Swiss American Historical Society in the spring of 1940 was Emil J. Schaefer. Born in 18 92 in Zurich- Hongg, he came to the United States as a 19 year old youth who just had finished the Gymnasium n Winterthur. He attended several colleges in the Midwest and earned a master 's degree in education from the University of Wisconsin in Madison. As a trained educator he worked his way up through teaching at different high schools. On the side he taught part-time at colleges and the University of Wisconsin on the subject of distributive education. He found his calling in the Madison Vocational and Adult School (later Madison Area Technical College) where he eventually became supeintendent and coordinator of the department of distributive education. Schaefer took on his new duty with con siderable enthusiasm and much good will.
