Abstract
Have you not sometimes wished to know in some detail how your (Swiss} ancestors, say of the 18th century, have lived, what kind of daily or unusual troubles they have faced, and what hopes and fears have sustained them? Derek Bowman's translation of t he autobiography of the "Poor Man of Toggenburg" makes just such a portrait available to American readers. It was painted by a writer who was unusual less in his external life-path than in his clarity of vision and in his power of description.
