Abstract
This book will be especially welcome to Swiss Americans who do not read German, yet are interested in keeping in touch with their country of origin or want to introduce it to their grown children. Ven Salis, widely known in Switzerland and beyond, can serve as a stimulating and sensitive guide to an understanding of the nature of the Swiss polity, of its past struggles, and of its present attempts at self-definition within the broader European and world community. A lucid and vivid style, well recreated in this translation, and a fair balance between controversial essay, disciplined historical sketch, and autobiographical report grant the reader an impressive thought into the cosmopolitan as well as the national dimension of Swiss life and raise questions of immediate as well as of timeless importance.
