Abstract
In April of 1718, Pierre Le Moyne , Sieur de Bienville, Commandant General of the French colony of Louisiana, founded the City of New Orleans. For the next half century this was to be in reality a French city, named for the Regent and with streets called Toulouse, Chartres, Dumaine, Bourbon, Dauphine, and Rue Royale laid out according to the proper French plan around the Place d'Armes. The buildings were of a definite French style and the cultural and social lives of the settlers were as French as they could make them. The most popular French governors were the ones who created a good imitation of court life at Versailles.
