Abstract

Max Silberschmidt, Professor Emeritus of History at the University of Zurich, is a member of the 'Board of Advisors of the Swiss American Historical Society. His life long occupation with the Anglo-Swiss world in general and the United States in particular and his achievements in this field have been recognized by the general editor of the Library of European Civilization series who honored Professor Silberschrnidt by asking him to write the present volume for that series. Its forrnat determined among other things the length of Professor Silberschmidt's book, as well as, to a degree, its character. His work is in the nature of an interpretive essay rather than a book-length study of the subject matter.
