Abstract
At the end of June, 1970, the Swiss Federal Council created eight new consulates in the United States and Puerto Rico. They were all of the same type, namely honorary offices, to be manned by honorary consuls. Honorary consuls, as distinct from consuls general and consuls, are not career officers. Thev receive their nomination in recognition of personal achievements - at their place of domicile. The newly elected honorary consuls come from such diverse walks of life as private enterprise, physics, sociology, business, engineering, textile industry, medicine and hotel industry. In this they reflect quite well the modern make up of the Swiss colony in the United States. They are not burdened with administrative functions these remain with the consuls and consuls general of their districts but are charged with maintaining close contact with the Swiss in their regions and with cultivating good relations with the local communities and, the representatives of business, the universities and the cultural elite.
