Abstract

To the Members and Friends of the SAHS ,

1 ) This issue of our Newsletter is entirely dedicated to the autobiography of one of our members , the civil-engineer Alphonse Kubly from Netstal in the canton of Glarus whose home is now in New York. It is a fascinating document, full of thoughtful observations on his youth in a typical Glarner milieu, where he grew up under the high moral standards of a family prominent in the tratidional textile industry, on his adolescence in the chaotic period of the twenties in Switzerland and in Germany, and on his new life in this country. He came here first as a hard struggling immigrant who had to rely entirely on his own efforts, and became a U.S. citizen in love with his new country where he had the opportunity to persue a successful career in civil engineering, and also as a civic-minded individual in various capacities, e .g. as a consultant for reconstruction in post-war Europe and as a technical advisor in developing countries - among them Greece, Mexico and Colombia. Since his retlrement he has devoted much of his energies to the most important Swiss welfare agency in this country, the Swiss Benevolent Society of New York . He, as others, seek to adapt its institutions to changing needs in a progressive spirit.
