Abstract
The publisher Henry Z. Walck has kindly sent us this newest children's book by Alois Carigiet for review. he Swiss edition in German has been published this year by the Schweizer Spiegel Verlag in Zurich under the title "Birnbaum, Birke, Berberitze". The English translation is excellent. The illustrations are of that high quality characteristic of this gifted artist. So are the reproductions made in Switzerland. Alois Carigiet is a meticulous observer of nature. His trees, bushes, birds and other animals are shown in their distinctive features. The child who looks at these pictures learns to see nature with keen and open eyes. The story is of that classic simplicity which reminds us of Homer and Johan Peter Hebel. A special flavor from Carigiet's Romansh background adds the charm of the Graubunder mountains. A family with small children is shown in its fight to protect the singing birds around their house from predatory animals. Surprisingly, neither the pear nor the birch tree, but the modest barberry bush is their best helper because it protects the birds' nests by its thorns. Alois Carigiet's works merit our special attention. Why not organize an exhibition? Suggestions for the realization of such a plan are very welcome.
