Abstract

Since his retirement from the Ethnological Museum of the University of Zurich in 1984, Hans Lang has devoted all his time to the American Indian Museum of the City of Zurich, the only such institution in Western Europe. It grew out of the initiative and the tireless collecting efforts of Gottfried and Martha Hotz. Already in his early youth, reading had awakened in G. Hotz a lively interest in the indigenous peoples of North America. When he was only sixteen, he purchased the first item, a simple knife, for his today widely known collection. Later he invested every penny he could spare in his venture that grew to several hundred pieces over the years.
