Abstract
The process of the industrialization of a previously agrarian region is not easy to analyze and evaluate since it is made up of and touches upon qualitative as well as quantitative factors of a considerable variety and complexity. Jurg K. Siegenthaler in his monograph Konflikte der Industrialisierung attempts to provide such an analysis on the basis of a historical-comparative study of two distinct cases of 19th century industrialization, Glarus, a small mountain canton of Switzerland, and Scranton, a city in the Lackawanna valley of northeastern Pennsylvania. The issues raised are significant inasmuch as industrialization is still the prefered precept for answering the problems of the underdeveloped countries today.
