Abstract
The title of this paper may arouse the expectation that we will concern ourselves mainly with a number of adventurous anecdotes from the biography of a prominent Swiss politician of the late 19th and early 20th century. I do not want to disappoint such expectations altogether. I shall indeed relate several episodes from Emil Frey's life which appear to be worth relating because they are not only quite unusual but - at least to my knowledge - also very little known. Frey's biography is linked to the history of Switzerland and Basel on the one hand, and quite particularly to that of the Canton of Basel-Land. On the other hand, however, it bears upon significant and dramatic events of world-history in a way which is very rare in biographies of 19th century Swiss politicians.
