Abstract

The following pages are excerpts of an extensive project in progress . It all started many years ago when I first became aware of the existence of a few locations in the USA named Bern (Bern, Idaho; Berne, Indiana; New Bern, North Carolina) . This quickly awakened a chauvinistic interest in me asking: "I wonder how many really exist?" (My hometown is Bern, Switzerland) . A cursory look in an atlas produced 17. With the addition of more detailed atlas information, bits and pieces of cross information, chance remarks, etc. (i.e from a collector of postal cancels) the list rather quickly grew to 35. To finally complete the present list of 53 it took hundreds of letters to various state, county and local libraries and historical societies as well as two rather extensive trips visiting most of the locations for a more thorough information search and photographic documentation.
