Abstract
Sylva Brunner, a well-known member of the Swiss colony of New York, is the author of a book (written in German) which was published in September of this year by the Peter Meili Verlag in Schaffhausen, Switzerland. "Pionier für eine menschlichere Zukunft" is a documentary presentation of the life of Dr. med. Wilhelm Joos (1821-1900) who represented his native Schaffhausen in the Swiss National Council (Nationalrat) from 1863 to 1900, and who was one of the most colorful and controversial members of that body. Joos was the champion of the "little man," and his name is above all connected with the phenomenon of Swiss emigration to the Americas.
