Abstract

On June 18, 1983, more than forty persons from the United States and Switzerland met for the whole day at the Restaurant zur Aeusseren Enge in Bern. The friendly atmosphere of that cosy establishment in the homely style of the Swiss National Exhibition of 1914, which had taken place in its neighbourhood, was greatly enhanced by a good lunch. The meeting was well attended, even though many members had sent their regrets. Among those present, we may mention Professor Max Silberschmidt, the former SAHS presidents Heinz K. Meier and Augustin Maissen, the director of the Foundation Pro Helvetia, Luc Boissonnas, the chief of the cultural section of the Swiss Department of Foreign Affairs, Rudolf Weiersmuller, and the long-time chief of its Auslandschweizerdienst, Minister Maurice Jaccard, also Ambassador August Lindt and Mrs. Lucie Zehnder, widow of Ambassador Alfred Zehnder. The U.S. embassy was represented by its cultural attache, Robert McLaughlin. With them and others, fruitful personal contacts could be established.
