Abstract

Bibliophiles and Indiana history buffs alike are apt to have heard of John James Dufour. The story of the man who established vineyards at Vevay, for years the site of an annual wine festival, and who wrote the classic and rare The American Vine-dresser's Guide (Cincinnati: S. J. Browne, 1826) is an interesting one and one that deserves more attention. His book is the second oldest published in the United States dealing with the wine industry.¹ The volume is important to students of early Indiana and Kentucky due to Dufour's personal accounts of his trials and tribulations in Jessamine County, Kentucky, and his eventual success in Switzerland County, Indiana.
