Abstract
Inglin, Meinrad tl893-1971), Swiss novelist and short story writer, was born in Schwyz. An account of his youth is contained in the autobiographical novel Werner Amberg (1949). His father, a goldsmith whose love of nature and hunting he shared, perished in the mountains when Inglin was only 12. His mother died three years later. After attending various schools and working as a watchmaker's apprentice and waiter, Inglin took up the study of philosophy, psychology, and literature. He also became an officer in the Swiss army and was frequently called upon to serve his country. He worked on the editorial staffs of two daily newspapers, spent a year in Berlin, and in 1921 returned to Schwyz, where he spent the rest of his life as a writer.
