Albert Gallatin, documentary, early American republic
Abstract
The publication of the writings of Albert Gallatin in selected printed volumes is both overdue and particularly timely. In order to come to an understanding of the formative years of the American republic, scholars need to have available the materials of the respected second-level political and administrative leadership of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. Of this second-level group of American statesmen, few were so highly regarded and influential as Albert Gallatin. The aim of the present scholarly effort is to publish in a six volume annotated edition the most important public and private papers of a figure important in the political, economic, and diplomatic history of the early United States.
