Abstract

Forgive me for writing a form letter to you. I feel I am justified in this case because I will deal with a subject which I hope interests all of us. For twenty years I have been researching the history of the small, original colonies of South Carolina. I was a lonesome person for most of that time because I could find very little information and very few people who cared about that tiny but fascinating part of history. Suddenly I am hearing that more and more people are active in this area of research, and I would like to contact anyone who might participate in some sort of clearing house or exchange so that we can all keep abreast of what is going on in this field. As you might suspect, my own interest arose from the fact that I am directly descended from several of the original members of the Purysburg Colony of South Carolina as established by Jean Pierre Pury in 1732. Delving into the history of that colony led me to widen my scope and research to other original colonies and townships. I have by-passed Charleston since that has already been so well documented. As I said, my work has always been discouraging because there was so little source material. I would go to research centers in Charleston, Columbia, Beaufort, etc., and not even find a card in the card catalog which revealed any information on Purysburg or the other colonies. Slowly I have gathered what I call my Purysburg Collection from obscure and scattered sources both here and in Switzerland. Last summer I gave that Collection to the South Carolina Historical Society which has accepted it as part of its permanent manuscript collection. They will reproduce it on microfiche which I will give to various societies and libraries around the country. The Historical Society will also place notification of the collection with the national Union Catalog.
