Abstract
Traditional anthropological wisdom holds that peasantry as a cultural type is declining in the modern world as the social and economic conditions for its existence disappear. Modern peasant community studies, therefore, often trace the transformation that is occurring throughout the world as typically peasant communities change and new "post-peasants'' emerge .
